New York, New York – so good they named it twice! Having seen it so many times in the movies and on TV, in November 2015, my husband and I were really excited to finally visit the Big Apple for real. It was all that we expected and more – noisy, brash and exuberant – and full of surprises.

We were based in Mid-Town, not far from Central Park, which was a blaze of autumn colour and the perfect haven from the constant bustling of the streets. We were mostly blessed with mild and warm weather, and the clear blue skies made the legendary NY skyscraper skyline stand out with great clarity – with abundant opportunities for photography everywhere we looked.

Determined to make the most of our short stay, we visited as many of the ‘must-see’ places as we could, from the iconic Guggenheim Museum with its famous spiral gallery space, to the Metropolitan Museum of Art – which was truly amazing in scope and would have taken many more visits to see in all its glory. We also took in The Frick Collection built up by Henry Clay Frick (1849-1919), one of America’s most successful industrialists. Housed in a beautiful early 20th century townhouse, the collection includes masterpieces of Western painting, sculpture, and decorative art – from Titian and El Greco to JMW Turner and John Constable.

No trip to New York would be complete without a visit to the Statue of Liberty, so we took the boat trip across the harbour along with seemingly thousands of other tourists and enjoyed a sunny morning admiring the colossal statue, America’s proud symbol of independence and freedom. We also had time to explore Ellis Island, which lay nearby and which in the early 20th century was the gateway to the United States for many thousands of immigrants from Europe and beyond. Later the same day, we visited the 9/11 Memorial and Museum, which told the moving story of that tragic day.

We also braved the queues at the Empire State Building and were rewarded with breath-taking views across Manhattan, even though the wind was incredible on the viewing platform 102 floors above ground level! There was also time to take in some shopping at Macy’s and to enjoy a Broadway show – The Color Purple, a musical based on Alice Walker’s Pulitzer Prize-winning book, on which my sister, Catherine, was working as Musical Supervisor. Starring Jennifer Hudson and wiith an uplifting score of jazz, gospel, ragtime and blues, the show is a real triumph.

Overall, New York didn’t disappoint – and we were delighted at how friendly and helpful the people were, always eager to assist us when got lost or couldn’t find the right bus stop. Thank you, New York! See you again soon!

Dental Health in Intensive Care

Post by: Gerarda on 16 Aug 2015

Dental Hygiene

Patients with compromised health in the intensive care unit were at a lower risk for respiratory infections if they received proper dental care.

New research shows vulnerable patients in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) who received enhanced oral care from a dentist were at significantly less risk for developing a lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI), like ventilator-associated pneumonia, during their stay in the hospital.

The study was published in Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology, the journal of the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA).

“Bacteria causing healthcare-associated infections often start in the oral cavity,” said Fernando Bellissimo-Rodrigues, MD, lead author of the study. “This study suggests that having a dentist provide weekly care as part the ICU team may improve outcomes for vulnerable patients in this setting.”

Brazilian researchers utilized an observer-blind randomized clinical trial design to analyze data from 254 adult patients who stayed in a general ICU for at least 48 hours. Patients were randomized to receive enhanced dental care provided by a dentist, or to receive routine oral hygiene performed by the ICU nurse staff.

Enhanced dental care included teeth brushing, tongue scraping, removal of calculus, atraumatic restorative treatment of caries, tooth extraction and topical application of chlorhexidine corresponding to each patients’ needs four to five times a week. Comparatively, regular treatment consisted of mechanical cleansing using gauze followed by topical application of chlorhexidine three times a day.

Patients provided enhanced dental care were 56 percent less likely to develop a respiratory tract infection during their ICU stay compared to the control patient group. Researchers note that enhanced dental treatment, including oral antisepsis routinely performed in ICUs could be more effective in reducing the oral bacteria and help prevent migration of these bacteria into the lungs.

Successful People

Post by: Gerarda on 25 Jun 2015

Group of young multi ethnic people holding word success

Think of success and the name Zig Ziglar comes to mind. He was an expert on success, and in his book, Born to Win! Find Your Success Code, he shared the philosophy that brought him that success. It is really very simple. He suggested that you have a plan and plan to succeed. In his book he provided the strategies to do just that. But what is success?

Below, he shares a short list of the characteristics that he believed comprise success:

What Success Is:

1. Success is knowing that you did a great job when you close the door to your office at the end of each workday and head for home.

2. Success is having a home and people to love who love you in return.

3. Success is having the financial security to meet your obligations each month and the knowledge that you have provided that security for your family in the event of your demise.

4. Success is having the kind of faith that lets you know where to turn when there seems to be no place to turn.

5. Success is having an interest or hobby that gives you joy and peace.

6. Success is knowing who you are.

7. Success is taking good care of you and waking up healthy each day.

8. Success is slipping under the covers at the end of the day and realizing with gratitude that, “It just doesn’t get much better than this!”

Success means different things to different people as you can see from this list. It also involves more than one area of your life. It involves the whole person. Focus only on one area and you will limit your success.

The Toothbrush

Post by: Gerarda on 18 Mar 2015

Toothbrushes

Not all toothbrushes are created equal. Regardless if you are choosing a manual or an electric toothbrush, there are a couple of things to look for.

Size: There are many sizes available, but see that your toothbrush allows easy access to all surfaces of your teeth, also on the molars – those large teeth at the back of your mouth.  If the head of the brush is too large, it will be difficult to use and therefore, will be ineffective.

Bristle texture: Again whether it is a manual or an electric toothbrush, you can choose between soft, medium and hard. Today most stores selling toothbrushes also carry the extra-soft variety. If you clean your teeth regularly, twice a day, then an extra-soft toothbrush will be good.  If you brush too enthusiastically, then a hard toothbrush is the last thing you want to be using. You could actually do more damage than good to your gums and more so to the root surfaces of your teeth, should they be exposed.

Providing you clean your teeth regularly using a proper brushing technique, you should be able to get rid of the plaque and by doing so keep your teeth and gums healthy.
